The fire started on November 8, 2018 two minutes after SoCal Edison reported an “occurrence” where the fire started and burned 96,949 acres. The fire burned 1,643 buildings and killed three people. The Woolsey fire caused the evacuation of more than 295,000 people.
The fire started in Woolsey Canyon in the Santa Susana Mountains above the Simi Valley. Santa Ana winds pushed the fire in a southerly direction.
Hundreds of homes in Malibu burned on both sides of Pacific Coast Highway. Thousands of residents were kept away in numerous neighborhoods along the Ventura Freeway and the communities along the Malibu coast.
Power lines were determined to be the cause of the destructive Norther California wildfires in 2017 that caused an estimated 3 billion in damage. Lack of vegetation management by the electric utility allowed arcing of the power lines upon contact with trees that ignited the blazes.
